FUTURE PAST; Tradition and transgression in contemporary art from Asia

“Gambar Umbul” are the Indonesian equivalent of bubblegum cards in Australia. In the 70s and 80s, kids could either buy these cards individually, or buy them as a sheet with a series of images on them. The series might be of pop singers, or football players, or characters from movies or whatever. Sometimes they would have moral or political ‘messages’. Sometimes they would be hand-drawn cartoons based on popular Hollywood movies (an early form of piracy).
For Gunung Krack: Pameran Gambar Umbul we invited a group of artists to design and screenprint a poster which responds to the idea of Gambar Umbul. These posters are about more than just nostalgia for a bygone era; they also respond to issues that affect contemporary lives today.
