The Krackatorium is an ongoing project from Krack Studio in which we take screenprinting to the deep, dark frontiers of science fiction. By mixing light and computers with screenprinting, Krack is able to create interactive light-based artworks for public spaces.

The Krackatorium can be reconfigured to be installed in any space. It is a modular project – the boxes can be installed in any configuration, and more lightboxes can be added or removed to suit the space. The boxes are designed to pack flat for easy transportation, and we will print new images and explore new modes of interactivity for each installation.

June 3 – July 4, 2015

In the first version of the Krackatorium, “The Family Jewels”, the space becomes a portal to another dimension; a lo-rez world where, apparently, the Ataris have taken over and Space Invaders are still real. Expect the unexpected. Enter if you dare.

For this first stage of the Krackatorium we built 180 lightboxes that can be controlled to turn on and off in animated patterns. For each lightbox we printed a series of simple designs on clear acrylic – the Krack family jewels. They form a random pattern that continually transforms as the lightboxes turn on and off.

Musicians and performers were invited to respond to the Krackatorium for this project, on various nights over the course of the exhibition

This work looks at the hashtags associated with Indonesian politics in the lead-up to the 2019 elections. Whereas political discussion used to happen in traditional media (tv, newspapers, radio), in this election the key issues are being debated through social media such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. These platforms implicitly encourage narcissistic, controversial and antagonistic posts by their users because these kinds of posts increase traffic and profits. There is no longer the sense that democracy is about seeking a universal solution, in which individual interests are sacrificed for the common good. In the contemporary political ecosystem, conflict is horizontalised as increasingly segmented communities fight to defend their individual interests.
